Can You Drink Coffee with Veneers?

Veneers can give you a picture-perfect smile that can last for a decade or longer with the correct care, like brushing and flossing. They can correct many issues at once, like stains, chips, and gaps. Veneers are a big investment, and you don’t want anything compromising your results, like your morning cup of coffee. You don’t have to give up coffee if you have veneers, but there are a few things you should know to keep your new smile at its brightest.

Porcelain Veneers Are Stain-Resistant

Veneers are made of porcelain, which not only looks natural, but it makes the procedure less invasive. Less enamel is removed during the preparation process because veneers are ultra-thin. Porcelain is also stain-resistant. However, that does not mean it can’t discolor over time. Damage to the protective coating on veneers can cause the restorations to lose their vibrancy. Food particles and plaque can get trapped in the crevices, causing your veneers to look discolored. In addition, bacteria trapped in the scratches will damage your restorations over time.

Discoloration Can Still Occur

Although your veneers shouldn’t change color with the right care, your underlying teeth are still vulnerable to stains. Drinking a lot of coffee and consuming dark foods or drinks often can stain your enamel, which may show through your veneers. It’s best to have any stain-causing foods and drinks in moderation and care for your smile properly to keep it bright.

Protect Your Smile from Coffee Stains

You can keep your pearly whites their brightest by following a few tips to protect against stains:

  • Choose the Right Products: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching your veneers.
  • Commit to Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes to remove food buildup and plaque. Floss your teeth at least once a day.
  • Don’t Sip: Whether you’re drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, don’t sip it. Instead, drink it all at once to reduce how often your enamel is exposed to dark pigments.
  • Use a Straw: Drink dark beverages through a straw to limit their exposure to your enamel and veneers.
  • Rinse Your Mouth: Rinse your mouth after having anything that may stain your teeth, including berries, coffee, or tomato sauce.
  • Visit Your Dentist: Schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist every 6 months. They’ll keep your smile healthy and bright while helping you get the most from your veneers.

You’ll never have to think twice before showing off your pearly whites by taking precautions to protect your smile from staining.
