The exam is the diagnostic half, where one of our doctors looks closely at your teeth, gums, and bite, using digital X-rays and an intraoral camera to see what the eye alone cannot. Your Exam

You will settle into the chair, and one of our doctors will look over your teeth and gums, checking for early decay, irritation, and any change since your last visit. Digital X-rays and a small intraoral camera let you see the same images we do on the screen beside you. Nothing gets recommended without you seeing why first.

Your Cleaning

Next, one of our hygienists clears away the plaque and hardened tartar that build up along and just beneath your gumline, working gently and checking in as they go. A polishing paste smooths the surface of each tooth and lifts surface stains, then flossing clears whatever is left between them. Your mouth will feel noticeably smoother by the end.

Your Screening and Plan

Before you go, we complete a VELScope oral cancer screening, a quick check using a special light that shows healthy and unhealthy tissue differently. Cleaning and Exam FAQs

Plenty of people have questions before booking, especially if it has been a few years. Here are the ones we hear most often at the front desk and in the treatment room. If yours is not covered, just ask us.

How often should I come in for a cleaning and exam?

Twice a year works for most people with no ongoing problems. Some patients with gum issues, a history of decay, or certain health conditions do better on a shorter schedule. We will tell you honestly which group you fall into after your first exam.

Will the cleaning hurt?

Sensitivity varies a lot from person to person, and it usually depends on how much buildup has collected and how healthy your gums are. Most patients describe pressure and vibration rather than pain. Tell your hygienist the moment something feels sharp and we adjust.

It has been years since my last visit. Will I be judged?

No. We see it constantly, and in truth, the people who worry most are usually the ones who take the best care of things afterward. Your first visit back is about finding out where you stand, not about explaining the gap.

Do I really need X-rays every time?

Not every time. We take them based on your history, your risk of decay, and how long it has been since your last set. Digital X-rays use less radiation than older film, which is one reason we are comfortable taking them at the interval your mouth actually needs.

What is the difference between the exam and the cleaning?

Think of the exam as diagnosis and the cleaning as maintenance. During the exam, a doctor looks for problems: decay, gum changes, bite issues, signs of oral cancer. The cleaning removes the buildup that causes those problems. You get both in a single appointment.

Can a cleaning whiten my teeth?

Polishing lifts surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco, so your smile often looks brighter afterward. That is different from whitening, which changes the actual shade of your enamel. If you want a dramatic change, we can talk about whitening options separately.

My gums bleed when I brush. Should I skip the cleaning?

Bleeding is usually a sign that your gums are inflamed, which is exactly what a cleaning helps resolve. Skipping the visit lets the buildup causing it stay put. Come in, let us see how far it has progressed, and we will handle it from there.

Do you accept my dental insurance?

We accept all plans that let you choose your own dentist, and we file the claim on your behalf. We are not in network with any insurer, so you may pay at the visit and be reimbursed afterward. Payment options are available either way.

What is the VELScope screening?

It is a quick oral cancer check using a fluorescent light. Healthy tissue reflects that light one way, while suspicious tissue reflects it differently, which lets us spot changes before they are visible to the naked eye. The whole thing takes a couple of minutes.

What if you find a problem during my exam?

You hear about it right away, along with what we would suggest and why. Some findings need attention soon, others we simply watch at your next visit. Nothing moves forward until you understand the options and decide, and we only recommend what you actually need.
